Sovereign AI will be a dead word by 2028. The contracts signed now will not

Sovereign AI will be a dead word by 2028. But Microsoft, Google and OpenAI only need it to live for two more years. Here is why.

Companies are choosing their AI setup right now. Which models. Which ecosystems. Where the data gets stored. Most of these decisions are made between 2026 and 2027. And most of them will stay in place for the next decade, because changing later is expensive.

So the big providers do not need to win the debate about what "sovereign" really means. They only need to own the word while the decisions are being made. After that, the debate does not matter anymore. The cost of changing will keep the customers locked in.

This is why every big vendor now has a product with "sovereign" for the EU in its name. And it is why 24 European cloud CEOs wrote a letter to the EU Commission in March, warning about legitimizing "sovereignty washing". Buy "sovereign" today and you think you are buying control. What you sign is a decisive contract with the vendor the word was supposed to protect you from.

In 2028 the vendors can drop the word. You will still have the contract.
