Convenience is killing us. The antidote is resistance

Convenience is killing us.

Not just metaphorically. Literally.

I've been observing technology's impact on human development for the past decade, and what research says is troubling.

Our obsession with eliminating friction is fundamentally changing who we are - and not for the better.

We've become allergic to the very suffering and struggle that are essential for human development and resilience.

Here's what the data shows:

Obesity rates went up 61% in just 20 years¹. 13% of Europeans feel mostly or always lonely, 35% feel lonely at least sometimes². Mental health diagnoses have jumped 4.5 percentage points in just a decade, with 40.4% of German adults now diagnosed with at least one disorder³.

The problem isn't new, but it's accelerating with AI:

Industrial Revolution:• Frozen meals eclipsed home cooking.• Drive-throughs idled our bodies.• Elevators made stairs a relic.

Internet Revolution:• E-commerce emptied Main Street.• Social media diluted real connection.• Remote work makes us move less.

AI Revolution:• AI thinking? Your brain, outsourced.• AI companions? Relationships, simulated.• AI content? Creativity, automated.

Here's the contrarian truth: The antidote to convenience isn't more convenience.

It's embracing resistance.

"Life is overcoming resistance." (Mother Teresa)

Ok, she didn't say that. I totally made it up. But it's true anyway.

  • Muscles grow through resistance training.
  • Skills develop by pushing beyond comfort zones.
  • Values strengthen when tested against adversity.

My observation is this: AI's greatest potential isn't in eliminating human effort (what most people seem to want), but in creating the right kind of resistance.

Leaders, use AI to foster genuine growth:

AI Critical Thinking Trainings: Train your people to use AI as "Question Machines" to foster their critical and systemic thinking.

AI Sparring Partners: Program AI to challenge assumptions, pushing teams beyond their comfort zones.

The future belongs to businesses that create the fertile ground of resistance, challenge, and productive struggle that fosters human growth and innovation.
