Cognitive debt comes from prompting and pasting without thinking
A recent MIT study seems to confirm our worst fears about AI.
It makes us dumber.
The paper, "Your Brain on ChatGPT," found using an LLM to write essays creates measurable "cognitive debt."°
Brain connectivity scaled down.
A sense of ownership vanished.
Imagine, 83% of participants couldn't even quote their own work.
The findings are deeply concerning.
At least, when you listen to most that talk about the study.
But they have not read the study fully.
Because the study actually found that cognitive debt develops when people prompt and paste mindlessly.
This is not what I'm doing when using Generative AI.
That's why my learning curve has never been steeper. My thinking never sharper.
My process starts offline. Black DIN A4 book, pen, and time to think.
Only then do I bring in my AI sparring partner. I use it to:
-Find flaws in my logic with Socratic questioning.-Pre-test ideas before they consume team time.-Synthesize insights from dozens of research papers.-Explore counterarguments to get closer to the truth.
The difference isn't the technology. It's your relationship with it.
A choice between two modes:
- The AI Consumer: Outsources thinking. Prompt, copy, paste. The path of least resistance, the road to cognitive debt.
- The AI Creator: Embraces the struggle. They do the hard work first, then use AI as a catalyst to refine their own hard-won insights. The path to cognitive augmentation.
But this creator mode has a price: your nervous system's capacity to process this information flood is the new bottleneck.
Building resilience becomes critical. This requires radical digital detox - forced disconnection, hiking, cold rivers.
Your relationship with the technology dictates the outcome, not the tool itself.
A choice between two modes:
- "AI-First": Creates AI Consumers - operators of a machine, accumulating cognitive debt.
- "Human-First": Develops AI Creators - empowered thinkers, building cognitive assets.
Fostering creators requires teaching behavioral AI literacy. It also demands an environment designed for resilience—one that offers the flexibility and silence needed to manage this new mental load.
Your choice determines if your team becomes superhuman, or a shell company for an API.
